First Phase of Erbil Green Belt Project Begins with Tree Planting

The first phase of the Erbil Green Belt project officially began, with the planting of olive and pistachio trees. The ambitious initiative aims to plant seven million trees and expand green space in the city by 25%, while combating climate change.

The KRG-backed project will cover 13,000 dunams in its initial stage. Experts focused on olive and pistachio trees due to their environmental and economic benefits. Olive trees, in particular, offer job opportunities for citizens and contribute to sustainable agriculture around Erbil.

Preparations for planting included clearing and fencing the designated Bahirka area. The project follows years of research, including soil and climate studies by Greek engineers, to ensure tree species are suitable for the region.

The Erbil Green Belt project was first envisioned in 2010 but faced delays due to funding challenges. Prime Minister Masrour Barzani championed its revival, providing political support that turned the plan into reality. Erbil Municipality Head Karzan Hadi highlighted the project as a critical step in improving the city’s environment and economy.

Ultimately, the project will create two green belts, each stretching 70 kilometers long and 2 kilometers wide, forming a protective ring around the city. Governor Omed Khoshnaw explained that the belts will reduce desertification, improve air quality, and provide recreational areas. Upon completion, Erbil’s green coverage will exceed international standards.

The Green Belt is also boosting the local economy. Real estate values around the project’s outskirts have already surged due to new infrastructure and land formalization. Strategic planning, combined with sustainable environmental initiatives, is reshaping Erbil’s urban development.

Additionally, the project includes sustainable water management, with over ten large ponds planned to irrigate the trees. This ensures long-term growth and environmental resilience.

The launch of the Erbil Green Belt project marks a new era for the city. It combines environmental stewardship, economic development, and sustainable urban planning. As the first trees take root, they symbolize a greener, healthier, and more prosperous future for Erbil’s residents and generations to come.
