Kurdistan Region Invests $138 Million in Khabat Water Project

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has allocated 195 billion Iraqi dinars, approximately $138 million, to implement the Khabat Water Project. This strategic initiative aims to provide a reliable and sustainable drinking water supply to Erbil’s Khabat district and surrounding areas.

Prime Minister Masrour Barzani approved the funding from the Ministry of Municipalities and Tourism’s investment budget. The funds will be released in phases to ensure smooth execution and avoid delays. Officials explained that the project will produce up to 120,000 cubic meters of drinking water per day.

The Khabat Water Project will include several reservoirs, approximately 300 kilometers of pipelines, and five kilometers of electrical infrastructure to support water distribution and operations. Authorities highlighted that this initiative responds to long-standing water shortages in Khabat, which have affected residents for years due to population growth, urban expansion, and climate change.

The Ministry of Municipalities and Tourism initially submitted the project proposal to the Council of Ministers to address water scarcity. The recent approval marks a significant step toward improving water access and infrastructure in the region.

Officials emphasized that the Khabat Water Project represents one of the largest government-funded water initiatives in the Kurdistan Region. Beyond supplying safe drinking water, the project aims to support long-term development, enhance local stability, and strengthen water management systems.

The KRG has prioritized major infrastructure projects in recent years to ensure clean water access across the region. By investing in strategic water projects like Khabat, the government demonstrates its commitment to meeting citizens’ needs while promoting sustainable growth and resilience.
