Kurdistan Region Parties Near Agreement to Form New Government

The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) are moving closer to forming a new Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). Senior sources confirmed significant progress in talks between the two major parties.

The Kurdistan Region’s parliament is expected to resume sessions soon, particularly within the next two weeks, sources said. The KDP’s Political Bureau will meet to discuss its relations with the PUK and finalize details of the government formation. Officials emphasized that both parties have made strong strides toward agreement.

Meanwhile, the PUK Political Bureau held meetings focused on recent discussions between President Masoud Barzani and PUK President Bafel Talabani. These discussions were described as very positive, signaling a commitment to resolve outstanding disputes quickly. The PUK has nominated two candidates for the post of Kurdistan Region Parliament speaker, including Shallaw Kosrat Rasul.

High-level coordination between Barzani and Talabani has accelerated negotiations, increasing optimism that the new government will form without further delays. Both parties publicly reaffirmed their commitment to reach a deal that allows parliamentary sessions to resume and enables the KRG to focus on critical priorities.

If successful, the agreement would end months of political deadlock. It would allow the Kurdistan Region to concentrate on economic reforms, improving relations with Baghdad, and delivering public services efficiently. Analysts suggest the new government could also strengthen stability in the region and support long-term planning for infrastructure and governance.

The KDP-PUK cooperation marks a turning point in Kurdistan’s political landscape, demonstrating that the two dominant parties can achieve consensus through dialogue and shared priorities.
