Duhok Expands Green Projects to Boost Greenness Rate

The Duhok Municipality is moving forward with major projects to raise the city’s greenness rate. Officials say these efforts aim to meet international urban standards while creating a healthier environment.

Sherwan Hassan, spokesperson for the municipality, confirmed that eight new parks are under construction. Five of them are located in eastern neighborhoods and three in the west. In addition, an 11,000-square-meter park is set to open soon.

According to official statistics, Duhok’s greenness rate has now reached 15%. With the completion of large-scale projects, including Aloka Park, the figure is expected to climb to 20%. Aloka Park alone covers 1,575,000 square meters, making it one of the biggest developments in the city.

One of the most ambitious plans is to green the surrounding mountains, including Mount Zawa and Mount Spi. Officials believe this step will not only improve air quality but also reduce the impacts of climate change. The project will give the city a stronger environmental identity.

The municipality has also embraced creativity from young residents. The old Zozan neighborhood stairs have been repainted with artistic patterns, while Shoresh Bridge now features a design made with artificial intelligence. These initiatives connect green projects with cultural expression.

Beyond boosting the greenness rate, Duhok is also upgrading infrastructure. Sidewalks are being renovated, new lighting systems are being installed, and pathways for the visually impaired are being developed. The city also plans to plant 1,000 more trees in the center.

On September 20, Prime Minister Masrour Barzani inaugurated Sarhaldan Park, built on the former site of auto repair shops. The new park features cultural, sports, and recreational facilities. During the opening, Barzani urged citizens and tourists to help protect the environment and preserve the natural beauty of the Kurdistan Region.

With these combined projects, Duhok is on track to raise its greenness rate and transform into a greener and more livable city. The municipality’s strategy reflects a long-term vision for sustainability, urban beauty, and community health.
