Kurdistan President, Sovereignty Leader Discuss Iraq Elections

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani met with Khamis al-Khanjar, leader of the Sovereignty Alliance (Al-Siyada), to discuss Iraq’s upcoming parliamentary elections and Erbil–Baghdad relations.

The meeting took place in Erbil, where the two leaders reviewed the country’s political and security environment. They discussed the progress of election campaigns across Iraq and explored ways to strengthen coordination between the federal government and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to resolve ongoing disputes.

Barzani and al-Khanjar highlighted the importance of cooperation among Iraqi political forces and communities. They agreed that strong collaboration is key to addressing national challenges, ensuring transparent and successful elections, and maintaining stability throughout the country.

Both leaders emphasized that political dialogue must remain continuous and constructive. They called for joint efforts to encourage voter participation, prevent conflicts, and create a stable environment conducive to fair electoral processes.

The discussion also touched on long-standing issues between Erbil and Baghdad, including administrative coordination, revenue sharing, and security arrangements. Barzani and al-Khanjar stressed that resolving these matters peacefully and efficiently will strengthen national unity and foster trust between regional and federal authorities.

Observers note that meetings like this signal a commitment by Iraqi political leaders to prioritize dialogue over conflict. They suggest that early engagement between key figures can reduce tensions, improve governance, and contribute to a smoother election cycle.

The talks demonstrate the Kurdistan Region’s active role in national politics and its ongoing effort to collaborate with Iraqi political alliances to ensure transparent, inclusive, and stable parliamentary elections.
