Erbil’s Green Expansion Advances with Tree-Planting and Runaki Project

Erbil’s green expansion is transforming the city into a model of environmental progress. The Parks and Landscaping Directorate announced that greenery coverage has reached nearly 20 percent, close to the global urban standard of 25 percent.

Rebin Ahmed, Director of the Directorate, said the ongoing “Autumn Green Initiative” aims to expand green zones and improve the city’s beauty. Since early September, more than 10,000 trees have been planted across Erbil’s six municipalities.

The campaign includes diverse tree species in parks, public spaces, and street medians to improve air quality and provide shade. The municipality planted 250 trees in Hasarok village’s forest, 300 along Hana City Street, and 250 near Lawlaw Park.

Alongside the campaign, the Runaki Project supports Erbil’s green expansion by supplying 24-hour electricity. It reduces diesel generator use, cuts emissions, and helps create a cleaner Kurdistan Region.

The Green Erbil initiative is part of the government’s wider vision to make the city more sustainable and livable. It also supports tourism by creating eco-friendly attractions and boosting local revenue.

Through these efforts, Erbil’s green expansion strengthens the city’s environmental identity and promotes a healthier future for its residents.
