PM Barzani and Italian Ambassador Expand Kurdistan–Italy Cooperation

According to a statement from the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), the meeting emphasized building stronger economic and diplomatic ties. Both sides highlighted the importance of using Italy’s expertise to promote sustainable development and economic diversification in the Kurdistan Region.

They also discussed Iraq’s political and security situation and preparations for the upcoming parliamentary elections, reaffirming their shared commitment to stability and democratic progress.

The two officials expressed their mutual desire to strengthen friendship and long-term collaboration between the Kurdistan Region and Italy.

Italy has maintained strong ties with the Kurdistan Region since opening its consulate in Erbil in 2015. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s visit in December 2022 further underscored Rome’s support for the Region’s development and security.

The Kurdistan Region’s stability, abundant natural resources, and strategic location make it a vital partner for Italy. Kurdistan–Italy cooperation continues to expand, offering opportunities in energy, trade, and tourism that benefit both sides.

Prime Minister Masrour Barzani met with Italian Ambassador to Iraq Niccolò Fontana in Erbil to discuss expanding Kurdistan–Italy cooperation in key sectors, including agriculture, tourism, and energy.
