Kurdistan President Nechirvan Barzani Meets Turkish FM to Boost Regional Stability

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani held high-level talks with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in Ankara.

The meeting focused on enhancing cooperation between Erbil, Baghdad, and Ankara. Both leaders emphasized coordinated regional efforts to address shared challenges and maintain stability.

Barzani highlighted the importance of dialogue and partnership in promoting security, economic growth, and political coordination across the region. Fidan reiterated Turkey’s commitment to supporting stability and constructive engagement with the Kurdistan Region.

The Kurdish president arrived in Ankara earlier in the day for an official visit. He is scheduled to meet President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the presidential palace later today. The upcoming discussions are expected to cover bilateral trade, energy cooperation, and cross-border infrastructure projects.

Observers note that these meetings reflect a pragmatic approach by Erbil to strengthen ties with neighboring countries while maintaining its strategic role in Iraq and the wider Middle East. Both leaders agreed to continue regular communication and collaboration to address security challenges and economic development opportunities.

The visit also underscores Turkey’s ongoing interest in regional stability, particularly in northern Iraq, where energy and trade links are critical. Analysts say sustained dialogue between Erbil and Ankara helps prevent tensions, supports economic projects, and enhances cooperation on security issues.

Through continued engagement, Iraq’s Kurdistan Region and Turkey aim to build stronger institutional links and ensure that regional policies remain aligned with shared interests.
