Over 3,000 Kidney Patients Rely on Dialysis in Kurdistan

Kurdistan’s Health Minister, Saman Barzanji, announced that more than 3,100 people across the Region depend on regular kidney dialysis treatment.

Speaking at the opening of a new peritoneal dialysis center in Erbil, Barzanji highlighted that 98% of dialysis servicesfor kidney patients are provided through public hospitals. He stressed that kidney disease remains a critical health challenge in the Region, requiring continuous care and medical support.

Barzanji explained that Kurdistan currently operates 15 dialysis centers, serving patients across various governorates. The newly inaugurated facility is expected to ease administrative procedures, reduce waiting times, and improve the overall efficiency of dialysis services for patients.

Kidney dialysis is a vital medical procedure that removes waste and excess fluids from the blood when the kidneys cannot function properly. This treatment allows patients to manage chronic or severe kidney disease and maintain their health and quality of life.

The Health Minister noted that expanding dialysis capacity is part of the Regional Government’s broader plan to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and ensure that patients receive timely and effective treatment. He called on the public and private sectors to continue supporting initiatives that address the growing health needs of the Region.

With the new center operational, medical teams anticipate better patient management, faster service delivery, and a stronger system to meet the increasing demand for kidney care in Kurdistan.
