President Masoud Barzani met with Adnan Zurfi, leader of the Albadil Alliance, in Erbil’s Pirmam district to discuss Iraq’s political situation and upcoming parliamentary elections. The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation among national forces to promote political stability and sustainable progress across Iraq.
According to a statement from Barzani Headquarters, both leaders exchanged views on Iraq’s current political landscape. They emphasized that cooperation and dialogue among national forces remain essential for ensuring peace and stability.
The Albadil Alliance, which plans to participate in Iraq’s upcoming parliamentary elections, represents a broad coalition of reformist parties and activists from the Tishreen Revolution. It includes groups such as the Iraqi Loyalty Movement, Iraqi Republican Gathering Party, Iraqi Economy Alliance, Enough Movement, Independents’ Alliance, Iraqi Leadership Party, National House, Iraqi Communist Party, National Civil Movement, Iraq Builders Movement, National Independence Party, Iraqi Intellectuals Movement, and the Democratic Current.
Zurfi, a veteran political figure, was born in Najaf in 1966 and holds a degree in Islamic law from Alfik College. His career in Iraqi politics spans decades. He served as governor of Najaf in 2004 under the Coalition Provisional Authority led by Paul Bremer and later became a member of the Iraqi Parliament.
In March 2020, Iraqi President Barham Salih appointed Zurfi as prime minister after Mohammad Allawi’s resignation. However, Zurfi stepped down from forming a new government the following month.
The meeting between Barzani and Zurfi highlights the continued engagement between Kurdish and Iraqi leaders as they seek solutions to Iraq’s complex challenges. Both sides stressed that constructive dialogue and coordination between political factions are crucial ahead of the parliamentary elections.
Their discussions also addressed broader national issues, including political instability, economic reform, and security challenges. By promoting cooperation and consensus, leaders aim to establish a unified political vision that supports Iraq’s democratic process and ensures long-term development.
