Erbil Citadel Gets $10 Million Boost from KAR Group and UNESCO

KAR Group and UNESCO have signed a landmark $10 million deal to restore the historic Erbil Citadel. The agreement, finalized in Paris, aims to transform the citadel into a cultural and tourism hub. This collaboration marks a major step in preserving Iraq’s rich heritage.

The Erbil Citadel, located in the heart of Erbil, dates back over 6,000 years. UNESCO recognized it as a World Heritage Site in 2014. Restoration efforts began in 2009, and the citadel has since remained a focus for both cultural preservation and tourism development. KAR Group’s involvement introduces a private sector dimension, strengthening funding and technical support.

“KAR Group’s partnership is crucial for transforming the Erbil Citadel into a cultural center,” said Baz Karim al-Barzanji, CEO of KAR Group. “We want visitors to experience Erbil’s history and heritage fully.” The company has already completed nearly 2,400 infrastructure projects across Iraq, from roads and water systems to schools and hospitals.

UNESCO’s representative in Iraq, Alexandros K. Makarigakis, described the agreement as a “great day for the Erbil Citadel,” adding that it ushers in a “new phase of restoration and revitalization.” He emphasized that working with the private sector, especially KAR Group, brings fresh momentum to conservation efforts.

A high-level signing ceremony took place at UNESCO Headquarters, attended by Director-General Audrey Azoulay, Assistant Director-General for Culture Ernesto Ottone, and a KRG delegation led by Safeen Dizayee, Head of the KRG Department of Foreign Relations. Dizayee noted, “Restoring the Erbil Citadel requires resources and expertise. KAR Group’s contribution ensures the project meets UNESCO standards while creating a cultural and scientific hub.”

Millions of tourists from across Iraq visit Erbil annually, highlighting the importance of preserving the citadel. Previous funding from the European Union, the United States, and the KRG laid the foundation. The High Commission for Erbil Citadel Revitalization predicts full restoration could take another 20 years.

This $10 million deal confirms Iraq’s commitment to protecting its heritage. By partnering with KAR Group, UNESCO reinforces the role of public-private collaboration in cultural conservation. The project aims to combine history, culture, and tourism in a sustainable way, ensuring the Erbil Citadel remains a symbol of pride for Iraq.
