Iraq Leaders Barzani and al-Zurfi Urge Unity Ahead of Elections

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani met with Iraqi politician Adnan al-Zurfi to discuss the upcoming parliamentary elections. The meeting emphasized the need for unity and cooperation among Iraq’s political forces. Both leaders called on citizens to actively participate in the vote.

Barzani and al-Zurfi underlined that broad voter engagement will strengthen Iraq’s stability and resilience. They stressed that political collaboration is essential to address the country’s growing economic and social challenges. The leaders also highlighted the importance of dialogue between Baghdad and Erbil to resolve unresolved disputes.

The discussion extended to the wider regional context. Barzani noted that Iraq’s political future depends on effective coordination among parties, communities, and leaders. Al-Zurfi highlighted the role of reformist movements in promoting transparency and accountability. Both agreed that constructive engagement will support long-term peace and governance.

Iraq’s parliamentary elections will fill 329 seats in the Council of Representatives. Thirty-eight parties, seventy-five independent lists, and thirty-one coalitions, including al-Zurfi’s Alternative Coalition (Al-Badeel), will contest the vote. Al-Badeel unites several civil and reformist groups, including al-Zurfi’s Al-Wafa Movement. Observers expect the election to shape Iraq’s government and leadership dynamics significantly.

A senior member of the Parliamentary Foreign Relations Committee noted that al-Zurfi, who served in parliament from 2018 to 2021, is seen as a potential contender for the premiership. Analysts say cooperation between Kurdish and Iraqi leaders will influence negotiations and political alliances.

Barzani and al-Zurfi agreed to encourage voter participation, promote dialogue, and foster cooperation across Iraq. Their shared focus reflects a commitment to national stability and inclusive governance. They called on all parties to work together for a smooth electoral process.

The meeting demonstrates Iraq’s growing political engagement ahead of the vote. It shows the importance of dialogue, unity, and collaboration in overcoming challenges. Both leaders emphasized that elections must reflect the will of the people.
