Connecting Kurdistan: PM Barzani Highlights Erbil–Koya Road

Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani has emphasized the KRG’s commitment to advancing infrastructure and public services, highlighting the dual-lane Erbil–Koya road as a key project. Speaking after inaugurating the Qushtapa Water Project, Barzani said the road upgrade is “another commitment we are fulfilling for our people,” aimed at reducing travel time, easing traffic, and enhancing safety.

Constructed by domestic engineering companies, the 15-kilometer Kesnazan–Gomaspan road includes dual main lanes, a service lane, four bridges, one underpass, and 40 culverts, ensuring long-term durability and modern standards. Barzani commended engineers, supervisors, and workers for their dedication, urging timely and high-quality completion.

The Qushtapa Water Project, benefiting over 240,000 residents in Qushtapa, Bestana, and 72 surrounding villages, delivers clean water from the Little Zab River to purification stations and extensive distribution networks. Barzani highlighted the project’s role in eliminating water shortages in Erbil and neighboring areas for the next 20 to 30 years and emphasized sustainable groundwater management.

Barzani also called on communities, educators, and religious leaders to promote environmental stewardship, linking water and nature conservation to social and economic development. He cited climate challenges, including reduced rainfall and drying rivers, as urgent reasons for responsible water use.

The dual-lane roads and water initiatives form part of the KRG’s long-term strategy to modernize infrastructure, expand essential services, support agriculture, prevent forced migration, and improve living standards across Erbil, Sulaimani, Duhok, and surrounding districts. These projects demonstrate the government’s vision for a sustainable and prosperous Kurdistan.
