Rebar Ahmed Meets UN Refugee Chief Barham Salih in Geneva

Kurdistan Regional Government Interior Minister Rebar Ahmed met United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Barham Salih in Geneva. The meeting focused on the humanitarian situation of refugees and internally displaced persons in the Kurdistan Region.

The Rebar Ahmed Barham Salih meeting highlighted the need for stronger international coordination. Both sides discussed ways to improve living conditions for displaced communities. They also reviewed ongoing challenges facing refugees and IDPs across the Region.

During the meeting, Ahmed congratulated Salih on assuming his new role at the United Nations. He wished him success in leading global humanitarian efforts. The talks emphasized the importance of continued cooperation between the KRG and international organizations.

Rebar Ahmed reaffirmed the Kurdistan Regional Government’s commitment to protecting refugees. He said the KRG will continue to support all people who fled conflict and instability. He added that government institutions remain focused on providing essential services and maintaining stability.

The Rebar Ahmed Barham Salih meeting also addressed long-term humanitarian needs. Both sides explored mechanisms to expand assistance and ensure sustainable support for displaced populations.

Over the past decade, the Kurdistan Region has hosted more than one million refugees and internally displaced persons. Many fled terrorism and political instability in neighboring countries. This has made the Kurdistan Region one of the largest hosts of displaced communities in the Middle East.

Officials said continued international support is vital. They stressed that cooperation with the United Nations plays a key role in easing humanitarian pressure and improving conditions for vulnerable communities.
