A cold air mass has hit the Kurdistan Region for several days. Snowfall and freezing temperatures have disrupted daily life. Icy roads have also caused problems. As a result, local authorities announced official holidays in some areas. Weather officials say the cold conditions will last for at least two more days.
A meteorology expert said the current wave of snow and rain will continue until Friday, 23 January 2026. He urged residents to prepare for colder weather. He also warned of dangerous conditions at night and early in the morning.
On Tuesday, 20 January 2026, skies will remain partly cloudy in central and northern areas. Eastern and northeastern areas will see overcast skies. Snowfall and light rain will continue until midday.
Temperatures will drop by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius. This drop will increase the risk of severe frost and ice in snow-covered areas. Winds will blow at 10 to 20 kilometers per hour. Visibility may fall to 8–10 kilometers.
On Wednesday, 21 January 2026, skies will stay partly cloudy. Minimum temperatures may rise slightly. However, frost and icy conditions will continue in mountainous areas and open plains.
Authorities urge residents to take precautions. They warn drivers to stay alert due to icy roads and reduced visibility.
