Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, KIU Secretary-General Discuss Regional Situation and Parliament Reactivation

Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Monday received Salahaddin Bahaddin, Secretary-General of the Kurdistan Islamic Union (KIU), in Erbil. During the meeting, both sides discussed the political situation in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, and the wider region.

According to a statement from the Kurdistan Regional Government, the two leaders reviewed recent political developments. They also exchanged views on governance challenges affecting institutional stability in the Kurdistan Region.

Importantly, a major topic was the reactivation of the Kurdistan Parliament. Both sides stressed that parliament plays a vital role in legislation, oversight, and representing public interests. Therefore, they described its reactivation as essential for restoring political balance and strengthening democratic governance.

In addition, the meeting highlighted the importance of constitutional and legal institutions. Both leaders agreed that strong institutions are necessary for effective governance and long-term stability.

Meanwhile, political parties in the Kurdistan Region continue consultations on key institutional matters. These discussions focus on parliament reactivation, cabinet formation, and stronger coordination between political actors.

In recent years, the Kurdistan Region has prioritized governance reform and institutional development. Authorities have worked to preserve political stability while also improving cooperation among major parties.

Furthermore, officials continue to emphasize parliament’s central role in the Region’s political system. An active parliament supports accountability, legal oversight, and public trust.

Moreover, Monday’s meeting reflected broader efforts by Kurdistan’s political leadership to move institutional processes forward. Leaders are increasing consultations to reactivate parliament and accelerate the formation of the new Kurdistan Regional Government cabinet.

At the same time, both sides underlined the importance of constitutional institutions in supporting democratic processes. As a result, strengthening legal frameworks remains a key priority.

Overall, the meeting highlighted ongoing efforts to reinforce institutional stability in the Kurdistan Region during a period of regional political uncertainty and domestic governance priorities.
