Two explosive-laden drones targeted facilities linked to Kurdistan Region leadership in Erbil early Monday. The attack raised fresh security concerns despite causing no reported casualties.
The Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Directorate said the incident occurred at 12:28 a.m. on August 17. According to the directorate, two Hadid-110 drones crossed from the direction of Iran before reaching their targets. Subsequently, the drones struck facilities in the Pirmam district of Erbil Province.
One drone targeted the private office of Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani. Meanwhile, the other targeted the residence of the Director of the Protection Agency, commonly known as Parastin.
Although authorities reported no deaths or injuries, the attack highlighted security vulnerabilities around politically sensitive locations. Moreover, the use of explosive drones demonstrates the growing threat posed by unmanned aerial systems across the region.
The Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Directorate condemned the attack and described it as entirely unacceptable. Furthermore, the directorate warned those responsible that they would face consequences for their actions.
Authorities did not immediately disclose the extent of property damage. They also stopped short of identifying the organization responsible for launching the drones. Therefore, responsibility remains unconfirmed beyond the reported direction of the drones’ launch.
The incident comes amid heightened regional tensions involving drones, missiles, and cross-border military activity. In recent months, the Kurdistan Region has experienced several security incidents involving unmanned aircraft. Consequently, authorities have increased attention toward airspace monitoring and counter-drone capabilities.
Erbil holds particular strategic importance because it hosts government institutions, diplomatic missions, international organizations, and security facilities. Therefore, attacks targeting locations connected to senior officials could create wider political and security concerns.
Security agencies are expected to examine the drones, flight paths, launch routes, and any recovered remnants. Additionally, investigators could review surveillance footage and other technical information to determine how the drones reached their targets.
Meanwhile, authorities may strengthen protection around senior officials and sensitive facilities. They could also expand drone-detection systems and increase coordination with international security partners.
