Barzani Calls for Stronger US Partnership in Erbil

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani met in Erbil with a US diplomatic delegation led by new Consul General Gwendolyn Green. He urged Washington to expand its partnership with the Region in various fields.

Barzani welcomed Green as she began her new role and confirmed that the Region would fully support her mission. He also thanked outgoing Consul General Steven Fagin for his efforts to enhance relations between Washington and Erbil during his tenure.

The president praised the United States for its consistent assistance to both the Kurdistan Region and the wider area. He highlighted the importance of expanding cooperation beyond security, covering economic, cultural, and developmental sectors.

Fagin expressed his gratitude for the support provided by Barzani and the Kurdistan institutions throughout his service. Green described the Region as a “key partner” for the United States and reaffirmed her commitment to building stronger bilateral ties.

The meeting also explored relations between Erbil and Baghdad, the broader political situation, and recent events in Syria and other parts of the region. Both sides stressed the value of maintaining open channels for dialogue to address shared challenges.
