Canadian Member of Parliament Tom Kmiec issued an official statement condemning the high-profile drone strikes in Erbil. Kmiec serves as chair of the Parliamentary Friends of the Kurds group within Canada’s federal Parliament. He expressed serious concern over the strikes targeting senior political and security figures in the Kurdistan Region. Specifically, explosive drones targeted the private office of Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani in Erbil. Additionally, another drone struck the private residence of the head of the local Parastin intelligence service. Fortunately, regional security agencies reported no casualties or serious physical injuries from either strike.
The Kurdistan Region Counter-Terrorism Service identified the weapons as Iranian-made Hadid-110 explosive drones. Furthermore, regional security agencies determined that external operators launched the drones from Iranian territory across the border. Kmiec welcomed Baghdad’s decision to establish a multi-agency investigation committee following the attacks. However, the Canadian parliamentarian urged federal authorities to conduct the investigation with complete transparency and urgency. Furthermore, he called on international oversight bodies to ensure that those responsible face legal accountability.
Kmiec stressed that observers should not view the incident as an isolated security occurrence in Erbil. The Kurdistan Region has faced hundreds of drone and missile attacks since military hostilities escalated. These repeated aerial attacks have killed and injured civilians across several areas of the region. Consequently, Kmiec described the targeting of a sitting prime minister as a serious diplomatic escalation. Moreover, he emphasized that attacks targeting senior intelligence officials could threaten broader regional stability.
Canada maintains strong parliamentary and military ties with the Kurdistan Region through shared counter-terrorism initiatives. Canadian Armed Forces personnel have previously served alongside Kurdish Peshmerga forces during international coalition operations against ISIS. Furthermore, Canadian lawmakers regularly conduct diplomatic visits to Erbil and meet senior regional officials. Therefore, Kmiec urged the Canadian government to issue a formal public statement condemning the attacks. Moving forward, Western allies could increase diplomatic pressure to protect regional governance and security institutions.
