Cool Summer in Balakayati, Penjwen, and Haji Omaran

While most parts of the Kurdistan Region face intense heat this summer, some mountain areas enjoy refreshingly cool temperatures. In towns like Penjwen, Haji Omaran, and remote villages in Balakayati, summer feels much milder than in the lowlands.

Meteorologist Omar Rawandizi explained on Monday that elevation plays a key role in this temperature difference. He noted that areas sitting 150 meters above sea level or higher experience noticeable drops in both daytime and nighttime temperatures.

Rawandizi pointed to the village of Weze as an example. There, daytime highs rarely cross 20°C, even during summer peaks. At night, the temperature often dips to around 15°C. He added that snow in Weze often remains on the ground all summer long, a rare sight in the region.

While cities like Erbil, Slemani, and Duhok currently endure temperatures ranging between 35°C and 48°C, the mountainous regions stay cooler. These cool zones offer a welcome retreat from the heat, attracting both locals and visitors looking to escape the high temperatures.

Heatwaves in the region continue, but Rawandizi noted they come in phases and vary by location. Some areas feel the impact more than others, while mountain villages often remain unaffected.

The Kurdistan Region’s diverse geography contributes to this climate variation. As a result, mountain destinations like Haji Omaran and Penjwen are gaining attention as ideal summer getaways. Their mild weather offers relief and highlights the unique beauty and comfort found in high-altitude regions.
