Eight Dams and 23 Reservoirs Will be Built During Ninth Cabinet

Since the start of the Ninth Cabinet, the Kurdistan Regional Government has built eight dams and 23 reservoirs. In addition, 58 more water reservoirs are under active construction.

The cabinet has made water security and drought prevention a top priority. As a result, the government launched multiple clean water and storage projects, with more underway across the region.

Rahman Khani, Director General of Dams in the Kurdistan Region, confirmed the progress. He explained that the completed dams can store over 250 million cubic meters of water. Several more dams are also being developed to strengthen the region’s water infrastructure.

Alongside these dams, 23 water reservoirs have already been completed. Work on 58 others is moving forward. Major clean water initiatives are also in progress. These projects aim to solve water shortages across most cities in Kurdistan for at least the next decade.

The two most important projects are the Erbil Rapid Water Supply Project and the Dukan-Sulaymaniyah Strategic Water Project. Both aim to deliver long-term environmental and economic benefits.

These efforts do more than store water. They support electricity production, improve agriculture, and attract tourism. They also strengthen the region’s ability to withstand the effects of climate change.
