Erbil Launches Major Urban Greening Initiative

Erbil has launched a major initiative to increase greenery across the city streets. The Erbil Parks Directorate is leading the project, planting grass and installing modern irrigation systems in key areas. These efforts aim to make the city greener, healthier, and more sustainable for residents.

Rabin Ahmed, Director of Erbil Parks, said teams worked on several streets, including the 60-meter road in front of Haji Murad Mosque, Baharka Street, the 100-meter street near Erbil Airport, and the 100-meter road facing the Italian Village/1. Authorities coordinated with city and transport officials to organize traffic and prevent congestion while crews carried out the planting.

Ahmed added that additional efforts took place on the 40-meter street from Martyr Mamosta Saad Hall to Abu Shahab Restaurant. He emphasized that these projects reflect Erbil’s commitment to improving urban spaces and enhancing the quality of life for citizens.

The greenery ratio in Erbil has now reached 20%, meeting global urban standards, which recommend a range between 15% and 20%. This year alone, the city has increased its greenery by 0.5%, compared to last year’s 19.5%.

Moreover, Ahmed revealed that the Parks Directorate is planning another tree-planting campaign, aiming to plant between 5,000 and 10,000 additional trees across different neighborhoods. These steps are part of a broader strategy to expand parks, create more green spaces, and promote environmental awareness among residents.

This urban greening initiative not only enhances the city’s visual appeal but also supports public health and environmental sustainability. Residents can enjoy cleaner air, cooler streets, and more attractive public areas as the city continues to expand its green footprint.

Erbil’s focus on urban greenery shows how strategic planning and sustainable practices can transform city life. Through careful implementation, the Parks Directorate continues to strengthen Erbil’s status as a modern, green, and livable city.
