Erbil-Sulaimani Highway Nears Completion

The Gomaspan–Smaquli dual carriageway, a key route linking Erbil and Sulaimani, is now on track for completion by November. The 22-kilometer project plays a major role in boosting Kurdistan’s economy and tourism sector.

According to the Erbil Governorate, the 210 billion dinar road is being built by the Hemn Group and is progressing according to high engineering standards. This dual carriageway includes six underpasses and three overpasses, ensuring both safety and smooth travel.

The road is part of a larger development plan that also includes infrastructure around the Gomaspan Dam. Once finished, this highway will enhance trade, reduce travel times, and open new tourism routes between the two major provinces.

Prime Minister Masrour Barzani visited the construction site. He thanked the engineers and workers for their hard work and praised the Hemn Group for maintaining excellent quality throughout the project.

The Prime Minister’s visit reinforced the importance of infrastructure development in the Kurdistan Regional Government’s broader economic plan. This road is one of several major initiatives designed to modernize transport systems and improve connections across the region.

Officials believe that, beyond transportation, this road will also support tourism around the Gomaspan Dam area. Its completion will not only link cities but also open new economic opportunities for surrounding communities.

By investing in such projects, the Kurdistan Region is working to build long-term stability and stronger provincial ties. As progress continues, the Erbil-Sulaimani highway is set to become a vital part of Kurdistan’s development strategy.
