Forests and Farmlands Burn Across Kurdistan Cities

In just six months, wildfires scorched over 27,000 acres across the Kurdistan Region. Forests, orchards, pastures, and farmlands all suffered severe damage. Fires hit areas in Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, Duhok, and surrounding regions.

Every year, wildfires spread quickly from spring to late autumn. This year, fire incidents increased in both frequency and size. Natural areas and wildlife faced serious harm.

Raed Fuad Ahmed Zarari, spokesperson for the Forest and Environment Police, confirmed the statistics. Between January and June, 145 separate fire incidents destroyed green land across several provinces.

The burned areas include:

  • 88 acres of orchards and vineyards
  • 8,653 acres of forests and woodlands
  • 18,656 acres of wild grass and pasture
  • Total damage: 27,397 acres

This wave of destruction left visible scars across many landscapes. These fires damaged public land and private property. In some zones, the flames wiped out important ecosystems and animal habitats.

Local officials have warned that unless stronger fire prevention measures are taken, future seasons could see even greater losses. The fire department, forest police, and environmental units continue their response efforts while calling for public awareness and caution.
