Heavy rainfall across the Kurdistan Region has significantly boosted water reserves in recent days. As a result, major dams now approach full capacity, marking a strong recovery for the region’s water infrastructure. Officials confirm that this development strengthens water security ahead of the coming seasons.
First, intense rainfall swept through most areas and increased river levels rapidly. Consequently, water inflows into key dams surged. Authorities reported that Duhok Dam reached full capacity earlier this week. Meanwhile, Darbandikhan Dam now stands on the verge of overflowing.
In addition, officials explained that only a few centimeters remain before Darbandikhan Dam spills over. At the same time, Dokan Dam continues to fill steadily. Experts estimate that around five meters remain before it reaches maximum capacity. Therefore, continued rainfall and snowmelt could soon push it to full levels.
Moreover, Rahman Khani, Director General of Dams in the Kurdistan Region, highlighted the scale of water storage. He stated that the four major dams hold a combined capacity of 10 billion cubic meters. Currently, more than 8 billion cubic meters of water have already been stored. This figure shows a major improvement compared to previous periods of lower rainfall.
Furthermore, smaller dams across the region have also reached full capacity. In total, 21 smaller dams now store significant water volumes. These reserves will support agriculture, fisheries, and environmental stability. As a result, farmers can expect better irrigation conditions in upcoming seasons.
On the other hand, officials continue to monitor water levels closely. They aim to manage overflow risks while maximizing storage benefits. Therefore, technical teams remain on alert around major dam sites.
Overall, this surge in water reserves reflects a positive shift for the Kurdistan Region. It strengthens long-term planning for water management and reduces concerns over shortages. In conclusion, sustained rainfall has delivered both immediate and future benefits for the region’s economy and environment.
