KRG Begins Road Project in Batifa as Peace Returns to Duhok

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) launched an 8-billion-dinar project to rebuild roads across seven villages in Batifa, Duhok province. The new work follows years of conflict between the PKK and Turkey that left the area isolated and underdeveloped.

Local residents now see bulldozers instead of military vehicles. Villagers like farmer Sadiq Benjamin say life finally feels normal again. “The past was full of fear,” he said. “Now peace and construction fill the air.”

The Batifa road project is part of the KRG’s wider “Road Revolution,” a regional plan to upgrade transport links and boost local economies. Managed by the Zakho administration, the project aims to reconnect the villages of Demka, Sorya, Shilan, Shirin, Keshane, and others to the main district center.

According to project manager Haji Abdul Latif, work first began in 2010 but stopped during the conflict. Now, with improved security, crews have resumed operations. The KRG hopes to finish construction quickly to restore access to markets, schools, and hospitals.

Officials say better roads will revive agriculture and trade in Batifa, allowing farmers to sell their crops more easily. The government believes such projects symbolize recovery and encourage displaced families to return home.

The new investment reflects the KRG’s commitment to rebuilding conflict-affected areas. Prime Minister Masrour Barzani’s cabinet continues to focus on infrastructure that strengthens peace and supports economic growth.

For Batifa’s people, these new roads mean more than transport—they represent hope, progress, and a stable future after years of hardship.
