Kurdistan Parliament to Elect Permanent Presidency in September

The Kurdistan Parliament will take a major step in September by electing a permanent presidency. Senior members of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) confirmed the move on Sunday.

The decision follows an agreement between the KDP and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK). Both sides pledged last week to reactivate parliament and push forward cabinet formation. This comes nearly a year after elections left the chamber stalled.

Vala Farid, head of the KDP bloc and former speaker, expressed confidence about the session. She stated that parliament will first select its permanent presidency. After that, lawmakers will work on forming committees and continuing with other legislative duties.

However, PUK officials raised concerns about power-sharing. Senior member Saadi Ahmed Pira explained that appointing a temporary presidency has precedent. He added that both parties must share responsibilities to maintain balance.

Elections in October produced no outright majority. The KDP won 39 seats, while the PUK secured 23. Other smaller parties hold the rest. This outcome forces the two dominant parties to negotiate a coalition.

Yet disagreements have persisted. The PUK warned that one party cannot control key ministries along with the presidency and premiership. They stressed that governance must reflect partnership and fairness.

Despite differences, both parties continue to highlight their commitment to cooperation. They aim to create a strong government that represents the diverse political spectrum. The upcoming September session will show whether compromise is possible.
