Kurdistan PM Barzani Inaugurates Qushtapa Water Project to Improve Water Access

Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani inaugurated the Qushtapa Water Project, aiming to solve water shortages in Erbil. The project will provide clean water to over 240,000 residents across Qushtapa, Bustana, and 72 villages for the next 20 years.

“This project shows that protecting water and nature must become a social value,” Barzani said. “We can make Kurdistan a better place if we use our resources responsibly.”

Barzani stressed the central role of water for life and development, urging citizens and institutions to prevent waste. He noted the Region faces reduced rainfall and drying rivers due to climate change. “Water scarcity can cause forced migration. We must act now,” he added.

The Qushtapa Water Project channels water from the Little Zab River to purification stations, then distributes it through a modern network. Awazan Company completed the project in less than a year. Local authorities and the Ministry of Municipalities coordinated implementation, ensuring high efficiency.

Barzani highlighted other KRG initiatives, including the upcoming Dukan-Sulaimani water project, as part of a broader strategy to strengthen water systems and infrastructure. These projects aim to improve living standards, support agriculture, and tackle climate challenges.

The Prime Minister called on teachers, religious leaders, and citizens to foster a culture of conservation. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to deliver essential services like water, electricity, healthcare, and education to all residents.

The Qushtapa Water Project marks a major step forward in ensuring sustainable water access and infrastructure across the Kurdistan Region.
