PM Barzani Meets Belgian Foreign Minister in Davos to Discuss Security

Davos, Switzerland – Kurdistan PM Barzani met Belgian Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib on the sidelines of the 2026 World Economic Forum. The discussion focused on regional security, bilateral cooperation, and developments in Syria.

During the meeting, PM Barzani highlighted the importance of international coordination to prevent further instability in the region. He emphasized that escalating military operations in Syria threaten both regional peace and humanitarian security. Moreover, he stressed that diplomatic efforts must accompany political solutions to reduce tensions.

Foreign Minister Lahbib voiced Belgium’s concern over the ongoing conflict in Syria. She called for stronger cooperation among international partners to address security challenges and support civilian protection. She also underlined Belgium’s commitment to working with Kurdistan on shared objectives.

The leaders discussed recent developments on the ground in Syria, including clashes between various armed factions. They agreed that dialogue between all parties is essential to prevent further escalation. Additionally, they emphasized that protecting vulnerable communities remains a priority.

The two officials also discussed the importance of multilateral forums like Davos. They agreed that international dialogue platforms provide critical opportunities to coordinate policies, share strategies, and promote regional peace.

Observers said the meeting underscores Kurdistan’s growing role in regional security discussions. They noted that active engagement with European partners strengthens diplomatic channels and enhances Kurdistan’s influence on international policy.

Both sides concluded the meeting by pledging continued communication and further high-level cooperation on security and political challenges in the region.
