Zakho Corniche Phase II Opens, Boosting Tourism and Riverfront Beauty

Prime Minister Masrour Barzani inaugurated the second phase of Zakho’s Delal Corniche, a landmark project transforming the city’s riverfront. The three-kilometer promenade has over 50 percent green space. It already attracts tourists and highlights the KRG’s development strategy.

The Delal Corniche project is a major initiative of the Zakho Independent Administration and the KRG’s ninth cabinet. It blends modern urban design with the city’s historical charm. The project extends along the Khabur River and includes wide pedestrian walkways, scenic gardens, restaurants, and tourist boats.

The new promenade enhances public life and creates a central space for leisure and social activity. Families, students, and visitors can stroll along the river while enjoying views of the iconic Delal Bridge. The project also features structural improvements, such as a 50-meter-wide retaining wall and modern drainage systems, ensuring safety and durability.

Prime Minister Barzani praised the project’s impact, noting that tourism in Zakho increased by 30-40 percent during the first phase. Officials predict that the second phase will double visitor numbers. This growth demonstrates the value of combining recreation, culture, and environmental awareness in urban planning.

The Delal Corniche also preserves cultural heritage. The Haji Ibrahim Mosque was fully rebuilt, and restoration work at the historic Qishla integrated the city’s past with its modern identity. These efforts show a commitment to maintaining history while advancing development.

The project reflects the KRG’s focus on decentralization, local empowerment, and economic diversification. Over 280 projects have launched in Zakho in recent years, covering education, healthcare, infrastructure, and public services. The Corniche now serves as both a symbol of Zakho’s transformation and a functional space for residents and tourists.

Visitors now enjoy a blend of natural beauty, leisure, and culture. The Delal Corniche stands as a visible example of the KRG’s dedication to sustainable, high-impact urban projects.
