Iraq Secures Salary Deal for Kurdistan Amid Attacks on Oil Fields

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the Iraqi Federal Government have finally agreed on a salary deal for Kurdistan. This breakthrough aims to end the months-long delay in salary payments for the Region’s public employees. Both sides now hope this agreement will lead to a broader and more stable financial relationship.

KRG spokesperson Peshawa Hawramani confirmed the agreement. He said Prime Minister Masrour Barzani presented the salary deal for Kurdistan during a cabinet meeting. After discussions, the Council of Ministers quickly approved the proposal. The KRG expects Baghdad to immediately begin paying the overdue salaries.

This salary deal for Kurdistan includes both oil and non-oil revenues. Officials stated that this is just a starting point. The governments plan to expand the agreement and improve cooperation in the coming months. The move follows more than two months of salary delays, which sparked frustration across the Region.

The KRG also used the meeting to address recent security issues. A series of drone attacks struck oil sites in the Kurdistan Region, causing serious damage. During the meeting, officials strongly condemned the violence and called for immediate action. They believe the attacks aim to cripple the Region’s economic and energy sectors.

The Council demanded that the Federal Government take responsibility. It urged Baghdad to protect energy infrastructure and punish those behind the drone strikes. The attacks have disrupted oil production and raised concerns about future investment in the Region.

These twin developments—financial cooperation and the response to attacks—show a new direction in relations between Erbil and Baghdad. The KRG clearly wants stronger ties but also expects Baghdad to protect its interests. The salary deal for Kurdistan is a key sign of progress, but security remains a pressing concern.

Moving forward, both sides must maintain open communication. The KRG has expressed its readiness to continue working with Baghdad. Leaders in the Region remain focused on solving both financial and security problems through joint efforts.
