President Nechirvan Barzani has demanded real action to protect and support the Yazidi people, especially those still suffering since the 2014 genocide in Sinjar and surrounding areas. Speaking through his advisor Dilshad Shahab during a ceremony in Erbil marking the eleventh anniversary of the genocide, Barzani emphasized the need for recognition, justice, and lasting assistance.
Barzani urged the central government to take serious steps to uphold its responsibilities. He reminded leaders that many Yazidis remain missing and displaced, with some still living in harsh camp conditions. According to him, Yazidis cannot wait any longer for safe conditions and a return to normal life.
He highlighted the work of the Office for the Rescue of Kidnapped Yazidis and insisted that this effort must continue until every victim is accounted for. Barzani also pressed for the full enforcement of the Yazidi Survivors Law, a legal framework meant to compensate victims and restore their rights.
Despite the 2020 Sinjar Agreement between Erbil and Baghdad, the situation in Sinjar remains unstable. Armed groups still control the area, and the absence of a proper local administration and public services makes it unsafe for families to return.
Furthermore, Barzani pointed out that the lack of real change in Sinjar is a major failure. He called on the international community to play a stronger role in rebuilding, helping families, and officially recognizing the Yazidi genocide.
The president reaffirmed the Kurdistan Region’s support for all Yazidi-related efforts, saying their rights and safety are not negotiable. He closed his statement with a clear pledge: “No Yazidi abductee should ever be forgotten. We will continue until we know the fate of every one of them.”
