Spain Boosts Kurdistan Ties Through Football Diplomacy

Spain is using football diplomacy to strengthen ties with the Kurdistan Region. Madrid’s ambassador to Iraq, Alicia Rico Perez, highlighted cultural and trade collaboration. She said football connects people and supports talent development.

The ambassador praised the recent agreement between Erbil, Baghdad, and oil producers that resumed Kurdish oil exports. She noted the deal will contribute to Iraq’s stability and allow Europe to access Kurdistan’s oil again.

Beyond trade, Spain focuses on football diplomacy. Spanish clubs like Real Madrid and FC Barcelona run football academies in Erbil and Duhok. Real Madrid trains children aged 6 to 14, following Spanish coaching methods. Barcelona launched the “Hope League” to promote youth development, social cohesion, and peace.

“These initiatives are part of Spain’s commitment to football diplomacy,” the ambassador said. La Liga also collaborates with the Iraqi Football Federation to develop local players. Training programs now reach multiple cities across the Kurdistan Region.

The ambassador noted Kurdistan is a safe region for investment. She emphasized that security concerns are minimal, while corruption and legislative hurdles remain key challenges. Spain is exploring infrastructure, agriculture, and agro-industry opportunities. Trade missions are underway to connect Spanish businesses with Kurdish projects.

Football plays a major cultural role. Spanish football leagues, Barça, and Real Madrid enjoy huge popularity. The ambassador said fans’ enthusiasm strengthens cultural ties and inspires youth. Spain provides coaching expertise, equipment, and mentorship to support local talent.

Kurdistan’s youth benefit from skill development, professional pathways, and sports education. Football also fosters dialogue between communities. Spanish clubs aim to expand programs and create sustainable sports infrastructure.

Through football diplomacy, Spain builds cultural, social, and economic bridges with the Kurdistan Region. The programs highlight the role of sports in international relations.
