Erbil’s Maternity Hospital is undergoing full digitization as part of Kurdistan’s ambitious health sector transformation. The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) aims to modernize services, streamline patient care, and create comprehensive digital records for mothers and newborns.
Dr. Dlovan Mohammed, Director General of Health in Erbil, announced the project and praised the KRG’s Ninth Cabinet for its support. He highlighted the government’s commitment to improving healthcare, including special budgets, infrastructure upgrades, and international ISO certification for key medical departments.
“This project will improve efficiency, reduce paperwork, and allow doctors to track patient histories across hospitals,” Dr. Mohammed said. “We rely on collaboration with private and public partners to achieve this vision.” He specifically acknowledged Shwan Zrari for supporting the implementation phase.
The digitization initiative follows the successful model used in Erbil’s Blood Bank Directorate, Pirmam Hospital, Rizgari Hospital, and the Thalassemia Center. In these facilities, digital systems connect public and private hospitals, enabling real-time monitoring of resources, faster patient admissions, and better management of logistics. Officials expect the Maternity Hospital to see similar benefits, including improved care for mothers and newborns and more effective resource allocation.
Beyond digitization, Dr. Mohammed noted other milestones. The General Laboratory Directorate, the Blood Bank, and the Cancer Center at Rizgari Hospital earned ISO certification, demonstrating international recognition for quality and operational excellence. These achievements reflect a broader KRG health strategy, which includes constructing new hospitals, renovating health centers, and expanding access to rural areas.
KRG’s efforts also focus on advanced treatments and human capital development. Programs to send thalassemia patients abroad for bone marrow transplants continue, while Kurdish specialists like Dr. Bzhar Najjar return from abroad to introduce high-level care. Local initiatives, such as the Kidney Dialysis Center in Koya, provide thousands of free treatment sessions, reducing burdens on citizens.
Through digitization, infrastructure development, and international partnerships, Kurdistan is building a resilient, modern, and patient-centered healthcare system. The Erbil Maternity Hospital project symbolizes this long-term vision and marks a major step toward comprehensive, integrated digital healthcare in the region.
