Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) leader Masoud Barzani announced that a new Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) is expected to be formed before Iraq’s upcoming parliamentary elections.
Speaking in Erbil with religious and community leaders, Barzani said that “serious work” is underway to finalize the government formation process. He stressed that the new cabinet will ensure stability and effective governance for the Kurdistan Region.
Since the last parliamentary elections, the Kurdistan Region has been governed by a caretaker cabinet amid political divisions between the KDP and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK). Both parties remain the largest in the region and continue negotiations on power-sharing and government portfolios.
In the recent elections, the KDP emerged as the leading party, securing 809,197 votes and 39 seats in the 100-seat Kurdistan parliament. Meanwhile, the PUK, led by Bafel Talabani, won 408,141 votes and obtained 23 seats. The results have set the stage for coalition talks to form a stable regional government ahead of Iraq’s national vote.
Barzani emphasized that forming the KRG promptly is crucial for maintaining political balance, supporting regional development, and preparing for the federal elections. He also highlighted the importance of cooperation between parties to address citizens’ needs and protect the Kurdistan Region’s rights within Iraq’s political framework.
The KDP leader concluded that the KRG formation process is moving forward steadily and that Kurdistan residents can expect a functional government well before the national elections, ensuring continuity and stability across the region.
