Fazel Mirani, head of the Executive Committee of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) Political Bureau, urged political actors in Iraq to respect the country’s parliamentary system. He said Iraq must follow its constitutional framework and maintain institutional order.
Mirani said the KDP represents a major Kurdish political force with national responsibilities, not just a party with limited influence. He stressed that the party represents a large section of the Kurdish population inside Iraq’s political system.
He also defended parliamentary boycotts, saying political blocs use them as a legal tool to express disagreement or demand reform. He explained that boycotts do not mean withdrawal from politics but act as pressure to improve governance.
On power-sharing, Mirani referred to Iraq’s post-2003 arrangement, where Kurds usually hold the presidency, Shiites the premiership, and Sunnis the speakership of parliament. He said the KDP does not aim to control the presidency but seeks to protect Kurdish constitutional rights within this system.
Mirani expressed optimism about relations between the KDP and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK). He said Kurdish unity reflects the will of the Kurdish people and should remain a shared political goal. He added that disputes between the two parties, including over the presidency, should not block cooperation.
He also spoke about Kirkuk and criticized Kurdish political divisions there. He said a unified Kurdish list could have secured the governorship. He argued that Kurds should have held the post due to the city’s importance, while other groups could take other administrative roles.
Mirani reaffirmed the KDP’s stance as a defender of Kurdish land and rights. He said the party opposes any arrangements that could weaken Kurdish territorial interests.
